Good Will Hunting stands as a modern classic. Some movies are celebrated upon their release but eventually fade with time, while others grow in reputation. Exceptional writing, acting and directing really stand out. It's an iconic movie that deserves the praise it has received over the years.

Unbreakable stands possibly as M. Night Shyamalan's finest achievement as a director. The movie is a low-key character study that just happens to also be a comicbook movie as well. The script is tight and effective. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson both give one the best performances of their respective careers. This unappreciated movie is now more relevant nearly 20 years after it's release.

Aquaman is a better, more polished movie than some previous DC entries over the last few years. However, it ultimately tells a by-the-numbers story with little time for character development outside of Aquaman himself. It's a step in the right direction, but with more time to play with themes and ideas within the script, this could have been a true gem for DC and Warner Bros.

The Nightmare Before Christmas deserves to stand among the best Christmas and Halloween movies of all-time. It's an odd, quirky movie that manages to provide warmth, melancholy and so much more. It has fantastic stop-motion animation, great voice work and a story that feels far different from what you usually see. It's a classic.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has plenty of talent in front of and behind the camera, but that talent isn't matched with a great script by J.K. Rowling. Too many plot threads and easter eggs weigh down the narrative and over-complicate what should have been a more streamlined, powerful storyline.

Halloween is a mixed bag of candy. While the setup is interesting, the execution doesn't quite work as well as it could have. Interesting family dynamics are barely addressed before the obligatory deaths and plot contrivances bring Michael and Laurie together again. The performances mostly shine and you can tell that there is some real energy in the movie, but it often feels like too much attention is being paid scenes and sequences meant to homage the original as opposed to standing on it's own. And the title should have been changed. How about Halloween II since it's supposed to be the direct sequel of the original?

The Gift hearkens back to the late-80's to early-90's when movies like Fatal Attraction, Cape Fear and Basic Instinct were big. While it may seem initially like just any ordinary thriller, it turns out to be so much more. With an emphasis placed on characters and theme, the script manages to elevate the material above the trappings of it's genre.

About This Review

Wonder Woman is easily the best DCEU movie at the moment. A witty, humorous script backed by excellent performances, especially by lead Gal Gadot, elevate the material. However, the third act nearly undoes much of what had come before by forcing a silly, generic "boss battle" at the end. As good as Wonder Woman is, it's failure to stick the landing in terms of the story and the ideas and themes it laid out earlier in the movie is what is most frustrating. While it certainly stands among the best comic book adaptations, the fact is that it should be up there with The Dark Knight and Logan, but it falls just short.

While fans of historical accuracy will be disappointed at the end product, from an emotional and character standpoint, the movie manages to humanize someone who has essentially become a caricature over time. Deft direction, beautiful cinematography, and a wonderful lead performance by Kirsten Dunst highlight one of the more misunderstood movies since 2000.

Spider-Man on the PS4 is easily the best Spider-Man video game, but it's not simply the graphics that stand out. The gameplay is intuitive and fluid and the voice acting is amazing. However, what really stands out more than anything in my opinion is the story. Several different story lines intertwine throughout the game, ranging from the relationship between Mary Jane and Peter Parker, Peter's relationships between Miles Morales, Aunt May and more importantly, Dr. Octavius. All of these are explored with nuance and subtle depth and the game's resolution stands out as something special.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is a hilarious send up of the James Bond franchise, especially the early 1960's ones. Mike Myers's strong script and performance is matched by a cast all on the same page and committed to the vision of said script. It's a great example of a movie that holds up over 20 years after it's release and is still as enjoyable (possibly more so) as it was when it originally hit theaters.

A messy script with little coherence, mostly poor CGI and even worse editing can't be saved by decent performances from the main cast in the latest Predator film. That it was written and directed by someone as esteemed as Shane Black is surprising. Rumors of studio interference seem warranted, yet at the end of the day, The Predator still stands as a mess.

Despite some flaws in the script and some pacing issues, Friday Night Lights stands as one of the better sports movies in the last 25-30 years. With it's unflinching look at the pressure on young athletes and how it can make or break you. The performances are pretty great across the board with Tim McGraw really standing out.

Starship Troopers is probably one of the most misunderstood movies of all-time. It simply took a decade for enough people to see that it was a lampooning of jingoistic militarism. The movie's acting is still a bit of an issue (although the campiness could be on purpose) but on the whole, this movie manages to say quite a bit. It's worth watching today more than ever and it's special effects hold up after more than 20 years. That is impressive.

Dazed and Confused wasn't a major hit when it debuted in theaters 25 years ago, but it has since gained a cult following and a reputation as one of the best movies of it's era. Richard Linklater recreates Austin, Texas circa 1976 with great detail. The actors give it their all and the music is second to none, with a soundtrack that is truly outstanding.

Snowpiercer is a masterfully constructed movie that is incredibly strong from the ground up. Working from a script that utilizes allegory as a way to show differences in class and how we view other people's inherent worth, the movie manages to turn something that could have been just a mindless, gory action movie into something with real depth and meaning. Great camerawork and excellent performances really help sell the world that Snowpiercer aims to show us. This movie deserves to be in the conversation of best sci-fi movies.

Garden State is a movie that appeals differently to people of different ages. If you are younger, this movie will connect to you in a way it may not at an older age. While the acting and directing are solid, the screenplay could use some work. That being said, it's still a good movie that has something to say about what it's like to be a slightly aimless twenty-something.

Mission Impossible: Fallout stands not only as the best movie out of the franchise, but as one of the best action movies of that last decade, if not all-time. It's a high-octane movie filled with insane stunt sequences by Tom Cruise and a driving narrative momentum. The cast shines across the board and Christopher McQuarrie deserves high marks for the direction and script (the latter has some small flaws). Overall, one of the movies of the year.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom while well crafted and shot, fails spectacularly from a script standpoint. It is essentially two movies mashed together in a very clumsy way. About This Review
The ratings below are an average of the podcast host’s scores. You can find their individual ratings by listening to the episode.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom while well crafted and shot, fails spectacularly from a script standpoint. It is essentially two movies mashed together in a very clumsy way. Missing from the movie is any sense of magic and wonder. It lacks follow through on themes or ideas and relies on cartoonish characters and motivations.

While "The Incredibles 2" doesn't quite soar the heights of it's predecessor, it nevertheless manages to be a wonderful combination of comedy laced with enough potent themes and ideas to create a compelling sequel that will allow Pixar to make a third movie and push it to another level.

The consensus among all three hosts is that Ex Machina is more-or-less a modern sci-fi classic. It is spare in it's story but big in the examination of potent themes and ideas. Given it's low budget, the special effects are utilized well and the acting is really top-notch with three actors at the top of their game. Ex Machina easily stands as one of the best intelligent sci-fi movies of the last decade.

The ratings below are an average of the podcast host’s scores. You can find their individual ratings by listening to the episode.
Tennis World Tour is a game that never should have been released in it's current state. The core gameplay is a mess. There are numerous examples of pressing buttons and getting a different response, therefore the one aspect that should be unilaterally perfect is broken. PS3-level graphics don't help, online play is currently unavailable and the player creator is amateurish at best. Do yourself a favor and wait until the finished game is re-released next year.
