Review Summary
The Haunting Of Hill House stands as a massive achievement by combining stellar writing, character development, acting, directing, production design and editing, thereby giving us a final product that feels not only polished, but focused and confident. While there are some minor quibbles here and there, this is one of the strongest seasons of television in some time.

Review Summary

Poltergeist deserves it's place among the best horror films of all-time. While it may not be nearly as frightening to audiences today, it is still unsettling and creepy, with some legitimately scary moments.

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil firmly plants itself among the best horror/comedy classics with a sharp script that not only manages to both upend long-running horror cliches, but actually say something about how we judge others based on stereotypes.

Review Summary

Halloween is a mixed bag of candy. While the setup is interesting, the execution doesn't quite work as well as it could have. Interesting family dynamics are barely addressed before the obligatory deaths and plot contrivances bring Michael and Laurie together again. The performances mostly shine and you can tell that there is some real energy in the movie, but it often feels like too much attention is being paid scenes and sequences meant to homage the original as opposed to standing on it's own. And the title should have been changed. How about Halloween II since it's supposed to be the direct sequel of the original?

About This Review

The ratings below are an average of the podcast host’s scores. You can find their individual ratings by listening to the episode.

Review Summary

Life is generally well-directed and the alien creature looks good, but the script has a host of issues that drag it down. Couple that with thin characters and little development and these elements harm what could have been a good movie. It's worth watching as a solid thriller, but it also comes off as a bit run-of-the-mill.

About This Review

The ratings below are an average of the podcast host’s scores. You can find their individual ratings by listening to the episode.

Review Summary

Halloween is possibly THE most iconic movie of it's particular kind. It's spare but highly effective script set a template that others have copied numerous times over the years. The acting outside of Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence isn't great. The haunting and iconic score and direction by Wes Craven is a masterclass in simplicity. Michael Myers is the original king of the slasher picture and this movie shows why. It holds up after all of these years as one of the very best Horror movies of all-time.

About This Review

Review Summary

The Babadook manages to be unsettling in ways that most horror movies fail to by engaging us in a tale where the psychology of the characters plays as much of an aspect as the monster in the story. Sarah and I both consider "The Babadook" to be one of the best horror movies in years, in lieu of it's strong acting, directing, script, themes and bold choices. A must-see for anyone looking for a horror movie with some depth.
