Review Summary
While the photorealistic animals are all very well done, the movie fails in part because of it. There is a distinct lack of magic, despite using almost the exact same script. The voice actors do a solid job overall, but at the end of the day, the "magic" of the 1994 original are mostly absent here.

Review Summary
Spider-Man: Far From Home manages to be both moving and quite funny. It carries over the elements that made it's predecessor so good, while incorporating themes and ideas that show Peter Parker growing up and the responsibility he must carry every single day. It's a breezy film that grows on you with each subsequent viewing.

Review Summary
Avengers: Endgame somehow manages to top Avengers: Infinity War by focusing on the original Avengers team, the emotional fallout to "the snap" and the toll that it has taken on all of them. An excellent script, stellar performances, wonderful direction and some powerful, emotionally resonant moments bring to a close one of the greatest cinematic accomplishments of the last 20+ years.

Review Summary
Ant-Man is a solid origin storyyyyy. It has more in common in tone with Spider-man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok. Some jokes work and others don't, but the lightness is a welcome change to some of the darker movies in the MCU. However, lackluster writing at times and a less-than-stellar villain do the movie no favors. Paul Rudd is the reason this movie works as well as it does.

Review Summary
Thor: The Dark World is among the weakest Marvel films in the MCU. The script is mediocre, often with flat writing and a pretty pathetic villain. The acting is highlighted by only a few and is otherwise unremarkable. It's redeeming qualities are it's sense of humor, Chris Hemsworth and Loki. That's basically it.

Review Summary
While Iron Man 3 doesn't touch the greatness of the first Iron Man movie, it far surpasses it's somewhat abysmal (by Marvel's standards) predecessor. A bigger focus on Tony Stark is welcome, but the movie is undone at times by curious character choices, some thin characters and a villain that was solid but could have been so much more.

Review Summary
Iron Man 2 suffers from "too many cooks in the kitchen syndrome". A tighter narrative focus on Ivan Vanko and Tony's father's history together (and the differences and similarities between the sons) as well as cutting out a good chunk of the S.H.I.E.L.D. sub plot would have done wonders for this movie. In some ways, this movie is one where you wonder what could have been.

Over ten years later, Iron Man still stands as one of the best Superhero movies of all-time. A well-constructed script, acting, and directing highlight how good this movie is and why it kickstarted the whole MCU we have today. It's template has been studied and used many times over the years. There is a reason for that.

Midnight Special is the kind of movie with few easy answers. Jeff Nichols dense, intelligent script is offset by too little information regarding character motivations and backstory that could help the emotional core of the movie resonate more fully with it's eye-opening end. Strong direction and performances however ensure that this is a movie worth watching.

Summary
Unbreakable stands possibly as M. Night Shyamalan's finest achievement as a director. The movie is a low-key character study that just happens to also be a comicbook movie as well. The script is tight and effective. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson both give one the best performances of their respective careers. This unappreciated movie is now more relevant nearly 20 years after it's release.

Review Summary
Aquaman is a better, more polished movie than some previous DC entries over the last few years. However, it ultimately tells a by-the-numbers story with little time for character development outside of Aquaman himself. It's a step in the right direction, but with more time to play with themes and ideas within the script, this could have been a true gem for DC and Warner Bros.

Review Summary
The Nightmare Before Christmas deserves to stand among the best Christmas and Halloween movies of all-time. It's an odd, quirky movie that manages to provide warmth, melancholy and so much more. It has fantastic stop-motion animation, great voice work and a story that feels far different from what you usually see. It's a classic.

Review Summary

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has plenty of talent in front of and behind the camera, but that talent isn't matched with a great script by J.K. Rowling. Too many plot threads and easter eggs weigh down the narrative and over-complicate what should have been a more streamlined, powerful storyline.

Creed 2 manages to not only continue the high quality storytelling from the first Creed movie, but in some ways, improves upon what has come before. A strong script combined with fantastic performances and deft direction make this a movie that can proudly stand next to the original as a worthy successor.

Review Summary

Halloween is a mixed bag of candy. While the setup is interesting, the execution doesn't quite work as well as it could have. Interesting family dynamics are barely addressed before the obligatory deaths and plot contrivances bring Michael and Laurie together again. The performances mostly shine and you can tell that there is some real energy in the movie, but it often feels like too much attention is being paid scenes and sequences meant to homage the original as opposed to standing on it's own. And the title should have been changed. How about Halloween II since it's supposed to be the direct sequel of the original?

The Gift hearkens back to the late-80's to early-90's when movies like Fatal Attraction, Cape Fear and Basic Instinct were big. While it may seem initially like just any ordinary thriller, it turns out to be so much more. With an emphasis placed on characters and theme, the script manages to elevate the material above the trappings of it's genre.

While fans of historical accuracy will be disappointed at the end product, from an emotional and character standpoint, the movie manages to humanize someone who has essentially become a caricature over time. Deft direction, beautiful cinematography, and a wonderful lead performance by Kirsten Dunst highlight one of the more misunderstood movies since 2000.

Review Summary

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is a hilarious send up of the James Bond franchise, especially the early 1960's ones. Mike Myers's strong script and performance is matched by a cast all on the same page and committed to the vision of said script. It's a great example of a movie that holds up over 20 years after it's release and is still as enjoyable (possibly more so) as it was when it originally hit theaters.

A messy script with little coherence, mostly poor CGI and even worse editing can't be saved by decent performances from the main cast in the latest Predator film. That it was written and directed by someone as esteemed as Shane Black is surprising. Rumors of studio interference seem warranted, yet at the end of the day, The Predator still stands as a mess.

Summary

Despite some flaws in the script and some pacing issues, Friday Night Lights stands as one of the better sports movies in the last 25-30 years. With it's unflinching look at the pressure on young athletes and how it can make or break you. The performances are pretty great across the board with Tim McGraw really standing out.

About This Review

The ratings below are an average of the podcast host’s scores. You can find their individual ratings by listening to the episode.

Review Summary

Starship Troopers is probably one of the most misunderstood movies of all-time. It simply took a decade for enough people to see that it was a lampooning of jingoistic militarism. The movie's acting is still a bit of an issue (although the campiness could be on purpose) but on the whole, this movie manages to say quite a bit. It's worth watching today more than ever and it's special effects hold up after more than 20 years. That is impressive.

Summary

Dazed and Confused wasn't a major hit when it debuted in theaters 25 years ago, but it has since gained a cult following and a reputation as one of the best movies of it's era. Richard Linklater recreates Austin, Texas circa 1976 with great detail. The actors give it their all and the music is second to none, with a soundtrack that is truly outstanding.

About This Review

The ratings below are an average of the podcast host’s scores. You can find their individual ratings by listening to the episode.

Review Summary

Snowpiercer is a masterfully constructed movie that is incredibly strong from the ground up. Working from a script that utilizes allegory as a way to show differences in class and how we view other people's inherent worth, the movie manages to turn something that could have been just a mindless, gory action movie into something with real depth and meaning. Great camerawork and excellent performances really help sell the world that Snowpiercer aims to show us. This movie deserves to be in the conversation of best sci-fi movies.

Summary

Garden State is a movie that appeals differently to people of different ages. If you are younger, this movie will connect to you in a way it may not at an older age. While the acting and directing are solid, the screenplay could use some work. That being said, it's still a good movie that has something to say about what it's like to be a slightly aimless twenty-something.

About This Review

Review Summary

Mission Impossible: Fallout stands not only as the best movie out of the franchise, but as one of the best action movies of that last decade, if not all-time. It's a high-octane movie filled with insane stunt sequences by Tom Cruise and a driving narrative momentum. The cast shines across the board and Christopher McQuarrie deserves high marks for the direction and script (the latter has some small flaws). Overall, one of the movies of the year.

Review Summary

White Gattaca has some flaws, it manages to take a powerful concept and create a compelling story. What really stands out are the themes, production design, cinematography and feel of the movie. Altogether, Gattaca is one of the best Sci-fi movies of the last 25 years and it's subject matter seems more timely as the years go by.

Ant-Man And Wasp is a light but fun-filled movie that is accessible to kids of all ages (parents included) and is lifted by some excellent special effects and good performances across the board. It may feel to light compared to Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther, but it ultimately has more positives than negatives.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom while well crafted and shot, fails spectacularly from a script standpoint. It is essentially two movies mashed together in a very clumsy way.
